Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (both born 1950 in Basel) at first proved themselves, with small, demanding buildings and projects, to be architects who are interested in a questioning of architecture as a contemporary means of expression. With their work in Switzerland and abroad they continue to successfully demonstrate that it is their firm insistence on the physical and material dimension of architecture which makes the intellectual and conceptual approach truly discernible. Ever since their first designs in 1978, they have been striving towards an architecture that corresponds with the age of the electronic media. In 1991, Harry Gugger (born 1956) and, in 1994, Christine Binswanger (born 1964) became partners at Herzog & de Meuron. The present monograph documents all important buildings and projects, from the Frei Photo Studio in Weil and the Signal Box in Basel, to the Goetz Gallery in Munich, the Tate Gallery in London and the Dominus Winery in Napa Valley/USA.
